When Alfred Peet opened his first coffee store in Berkeley, California, his goal was to create a superior coffee. He roasted it in smaller batches using superior quality beans, and roasted them darker to produce a richer, more complex coffee, a radical departure from what was available at the time. He mentored and inspired a generation of coffee entrepreneurs, including the founders of Starbucks, who used Peet's roasted beans during their early years, and his legacy continues to inspire a loyal following of coffee lovers to this day.

In 1916 Charlotte Diedrich inherited a coffee plantation in Costa Rica. When her son Carl added a second plantation in Antigua, Guatemala, he took to loading up a VW van with hand-selected Arabica beans and driving it to Orange County, California, where he gave Californians their first taste of true single origin specialty coffee. Today Diedrich Coffee is one of the largest specialty coffee roasters in the Western U.S., offering a full line of single origin and exotic blends made from beans grown in the Americas, Africa and Indonesia.
